We’ve taken the first step on the long and winding road to Ulaan Baator. The fee is paid, and the application forms are filed for the 11th Mongol Rally, HIIIIHAAAA!!!
Now all there is left to do is to buy a crappy car, get some sponsors, find some team mates and get ready for the start in the UK, on the 19th of July 2014.
Sooo… if there is someone out there who’s a mechanic good enough to mend anything with only the use of duck tape (what the f… is duck tape, I hear you say? That’s for me to know and you to find out), a hammer and chewing gum, and who knows how to take great pictures, edit them and pop them on to a blog; who has enough patience and diplomatic skills to handle corrupt Uzbeki custom officers that will only let you pass if they get a million dollars and your little sister; who knows how to wiggle a Toyota Yaris over the 4 600 meter high passes on the Pamir Highway; who knows how to get milk out of a Yak before dying of thirst because you are lost somewhere on the Mongolian steppes and who doesn’t mind driving 1/3 around planet Earth (and back again) – all this in a tiny car with a smelly viking – then let me know.
If, however, you have no such skills but just feel adventurous, you might still qualify.
Also, look at the following video.
By now I´m sure that some of my more philosophical friends are coming up with the inevitable question: WHY?
But then you are not asking the right question. The question is: WHY NOT!
If you absolutely have to have a reason, I will quote the founders of the rally, The Adventurists:
«We fight to make the world less boring! Some git has already walked off the edge of all our maps, there’s a traffic jam to get to the top of the world’s tallest mountain, every millimeter of our good planet has been scanned by satellites and rammed into your mobile phone. What room is there left for those of us who still yearn for a bit of old school adventure? We live in a hermetically sealed, health & safety shit-storm where using a ladder is considered unacceptably dangerous and adventure travel means a guided tour up a mountain or staying in a hotel with less than four stars.
Here at The Adventurists we believe there is still adventure to be found in the world. We just need to go try that little bit harder to find it.»
Now, if that isn’t enough for you, the Mongol Rally is actually a fund raiser as well. So a part of the fun is to collect money for the projects of Cool Earth.
So you’ll be saving the world while having the adventure of a lifetime!
If you are serious about joining me on this journey for som 35 000 kilometres, let me know.
Together we will then work out a rough plan for everything from a team name to what route to choose on the wicked way to Ulaan Baator.
I’m in! What do I do?
